Feeling low once in a while on some situations is part of life and everyone goes through it sometime or the other. But, if the feeling persists and interferes with your work and other activities, then it can not be considered as normal, and needs attention. This feeling low or depression is a serious problem which may further give rise to other psychological disorders, panic attacks being one of them. It is necessary to get proper treatment for depression under professional medical guidance. One should not wait for it to be alright on its own.
Depression is one such psychological problem which may lead to other mental problems, if it is ignored for a long time. Depression becomes a cause for panic attacks because a person suffering from it feels hopeless and has a negative attitude towards life. Such people are not able to control his/her emotions when they come across an unexpected stressful situation. They do not have confidence to face it or handle it and as a result, suffer from a panic attack.
Among other psychological problems, anxiety is one such problem which may be caused due to depression. Anxiety disorders are of many kinds. The most debilitating of them is Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD. It is the disorder which results from a person’s experiencing, or witnessing some extremely tragic incident which traumatized the person completely. The memories of those traumatic events relive when the person finds himself in something similar or any other stressful condition and he ends up having panic attacks. These memories may haunt him even when the person is sleeping
in the forms of nightmares. People suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder need support from both ends; medical as well as emotional.
People who are already going through anxiety disorders or depression are more prone to having panic attacks. This is due to the fact that these people already have less control over their feelings and suffer from low confidence; hence they over react to any situation which causes stress, and feel extreme feeling of anxiety and fear. These attacks may last for a few seconds to may be half an hour, depending upon the situation and the condition of the person.
Stress has been considered as the main cause for panic attacks. Therefore, people who are suffering from anxiety disorders find themselves unable to cop with the stressful situation and suffer a panic attack on finding themselves in one such situation. In case of having Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, it becomes all the more reason to be extra careful as these people may get the attack more often. They should be kept away from any stress as long as it is possible and should be given proper medical guidance and treatment.
