Cortrosyn Usage: Cosyntropin is man-made (synthetic) portion of natural hormone ACTH. It's used to help doctors diagnose adrenal gland problems (e.g., Addison's disease, insufficiency due to steroid use, tumors).
Cortrosyn can be used also for: this medication may also be used for long-term (chronic) medical conditions that produce swelling (inflammation) that may respond to corticosteroids.
How to use Cortrosyn: this drug is injected in to a muscle (IM) or into vein (IV). When given IV, this may be injected directly into vein over 2 minutes or infused over 6 hours mixed in dextrose or saline solution as directed by your pharmacist. Depending on the type of test your healthcare professional is performing, he/she may require blood or urine samples to measure your response to the tests. Consult your physician for details. Before using, check this product visually for particles or discoloration. If either is present, don't use liquid. Learn how to store and discard needles & medical supplies safely. Consult your pharmacist.
Cortrosyn side effects: Minor irritation at the injection site (e.g., redness, swelling) may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor. Tell you're physician immediately if any of these highly unlikely but very serious side effects occur: severe swelling, irregular heartbeat, headache, dizziness, blurred vision. An allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate healthcare attention if this occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact youre doctor or pharmacist.
Cortrosyn Precautions: Tell your physician your medical history, especially of: kidney problems, any allergies. this medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss risks and benefits with youre pharmacist. this isn't known whether this drug passes into breast milk. Because of potential risk to infant, breast-feeding while using it drug is not recommended. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
Cortrosyn med interactions: Tell your doctor of all prescription & nonprescription drug you may use, especially: 'water pills' (diuretics such as furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide), mifepristone. do not start or stop any medicine without healthcare professional or doctor approval.
Cortrosyn Overdose: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
Cortrosyn special notes: Laboratory and/or medical tests may be performed to monitor your progress.
If you missed Cortrosyn dose: Not applicable.
Cortrosyn Storage: Before mixing, store at room temperature between 59 & 86 degrees F (15 & 30 degrees C) away from light. After mixing, this product should be used immediately. Discard any unused portion of vial.
