Mesna Usage: Mesna is used along with ifosfamide or cyclophosphamide (anticancer medications) to protect against bladder condition called hemorrhagic cystitis.
How to use Mesna: this medication is administered by injection into a vein by a health care professional. this must be given along with each ifosfamide dose & at 4 & 8 hours after each ifosfamide dose. Drink in least quart (4 cups) of liquid each day while taking this pill, unless directed otherwise by some your doctor.
Mesna side effects: Headache, injection site reactions, flushing, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, bad taste in mouth, loss of appetite, drowsiness, or coughing may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, inform your physician or pharmacist promptly. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these serious side effects occur: pink or red urine, fever, throat swelling, flu-like symptoms, arm or leg pain. An allergic reaction to this medication is unlikely, but seek immediate healthcare attention if this occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice another effects not listed above, contact your healthcare professional or healthcare professional.
Mesna Precautions: Tell you're doctor your medical history, especially of: other illnesses, allergies. this drug may make you dizzy or drowsy; use caution engaging at activities requiring alertness such as driving or using machinery. Limit alcoholic beverages. a preservative (benzyl alcohol) which may be found in this product or in liquid used to mix it product (diluent) can infrequently cause serious problems (sometimes death) if given by injection to an infant during the 1st months about life (neonatal period). the risk is greater with lower birth weight infants and is greater with increased amounts of benzyl alcohol. Symptoms include sudden gasping, low blood pressure, or very slow heartbeat. Report these symptoms to physician immediately should they occur. If possible, preservative-free product should be used when treating neonates. Before using this medication, tell your doctor if you are pregnant. It's not known if mesna passes into breast milk. Consult your physician before breast-feeding.
Mesna medication interactions: Tell you're healthcare professional or pharmacist about every prescription and nonprescription medications you may use. do not start or stop any medicine with out doctor or pharmacist approval.
Mesna Overdose: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
Mesna special notes: this medication does not prevent every side effects of ifosfamide. It's useful only in protecting against hemorrhagic cystitis; however, it isn't effective in all patients.
If you missed Mesna dose: this is important that each dose be used as scheduled. If you miss a dose, contact your physician who will help establish new dose schedule. don't double dose to catch up.
Mesna Storage: After preparation, this drug is stable since 24 hours at 77 degrees F (25 degrees C). Before preparation, store vials at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15-30 degrees C).
