Warning: rarely, this medication has caused severe, rarely fatal, liver and blood problems (e.g., lactic acidosis, granulocytopenia, anemia), especially in poeple with advanced HIV infection. Prolonged use of zidovudine has caused muscle aches similar to those produced by HIV. Notify your pharmacist immediately if you have: dark urine, yellowing about the skin or eyes, abdominal or stomach pain, unusual fatigue, muscle aches, rapid breathing, drowsiness, symptoms about infection such as persistent fever or sore throat.

Retrovir Usage: Zidovudine is nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor antiviral agent used to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. this works by slowing growth of virus. it isnt a cure for HIV & does not prevent passing of HIV to others. it medication is also used in pregnant women to prevent spreading the virus to fetus.

Retrovir can be used also for: this drug may also be used to prevent HIV after coming in contact with the virus.

How to use Retrovir: Take this medicine exactly as your physician prescribed. If it medicine is prescribed every four hours, it is important to take this around the clock, even though this might disrupt your sleep. Frequently it is prescribed less often than every 4 hours & in combination with other anti-HIV meds.

Retrovir side effects: this medication may cause headache, trouble sleeping, muscle soreness, nausea or discoloration about finger & toe nails as youre body adjusts to tablet. Inform your pharmacist if these symptoms persist or become severe. Notify your doctor immediately if you experience: fever, chills, sore throat, unusual tiredness, weakness, pale skin (anemia), lack of coordination, unusual bleeding or bruising, abdominal discomfort, difficulty breathing, rapid breathing, dark urine, muscle aches, yellowing eyes/skin. Changes in body fat may occur while you are taking it medication (e.g., increased fat in the upper back & stomach areas, decreased fat in arms and legs). cause and long-term effects about these changes are unknown. Discuss risks and benefits about therapy with your doctor, as well as the possible role about exercise to reduce it side effect. in the unlikely series you have an allergic reaction to this drug, seek immediate medical attention. Symptoms about an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, breathing trouble. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your pharmacist or physician.

Retrovir pill interactions: Tell your pharmacist of any over-the-counter or prescription pills you taking, especially: ganciclovir, dapsone, ribavirin, fluconazole, interferon, methadone, aspirin, probenecid, rifamycins, acetaminophen, cimetidine, valproic acid, indomethacin, lorazepam, oxazepam, phenytoin, amphotericin B, co-trimoxazole, doxorubicin, flucytosine, pentamidine, atovaquone, vinblastine, vincristine (drugs that suppress the bone marrow). do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.

Retrovir Overdose: If overdose is suspected, contact youre local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, drowsiness, and confusion.

Retrovir special notes: Blood tests will probably be done on regular basis to monitor how well medicine is working. it med is very potent & should not be shared.

If you missed Retrovir dose: If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. If this is within 2 hours of next dose, skip missed dose & resume your usual dosing schedule. Its important not to miss doses of this drug.

Retrovir Storage: Store at room temperature between 59 to 77 degrees F (15 to 25 degrees C) & keep away from moisture & sunlight. do not store in the bathroom.
