    Zoledronic acid - injection

    (zole-eh-dron-ick acid)

    common brand names: Zometa

    Warning: this med can cause severe kidney problems or possibly kidney failure if given too quickly (over less than 15 minutes) or if dose exceeds the recommended dose (4 mg). Give this med exactly as prescribed. Consult your healthcare professional or pharmacist since additional info.

    Zometa Usage: Zoledronic acid is used to treat condition of the bones (hypercalcemia of malignancy-HCM) sometimes caused by cancer. this condition causes high calcium levels (hypercalcemia) and weakens your bones.

    How to use Zometa: Follow all instructions for proper mixing & dilution with correct IV fluids. do not mix this medication with calcium-containing mixing solutions (e.g., Lactated Ringers). If you have questions regarding use of it medication, consult some your pharmacist. Give this medication by vein (IV) over in least 15 minutes in saline (0.9% sodium chloride) or dextrose (D5W) solution as directed by some your doctor. Additional IV fluids may be given before, during, or after your treatment with this med. the dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy but shouldnot be greater than 4 mg (each dose) or be given faster than recommended rate (over 15 minutes). Doses greater than 4 mg or given quickly increase risk for kidney problems. Consult your pharmacist or physician. it may take up to 7 days before the full benefit of this drug takes effect. Before using, bucks this product visually for particles or discoloration. If ether is present, do not use liquid. Learn how to store & discard needles & medical supplies safely. Consult you're healthcare professional.

    Zometa side effects: Nausea, vomiting, pain/redness/swelling at the injection site, or flu-like symptoms (e.g., fever, chills, muscle/joint aches or pains) may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify some your doctor. Tell your healthcare professional immediately if any of these serious side effects occur: change in amount of urine, rash, itching, dizziness, lightheadedness, unusual weakness or tiredness, trouble sleeping, trouble breathing, burning or painful urination, mental/mood changes (e.g., agitation, anxiety, confusion). Tell you're doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: chest pain, swelling of the legs or mouth, trouble swallowing, eye or vision problems (e.g., 'pink eye'/conjunctivitis), persistent sore throat & fever, unusual bruising or bleeding. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact you're doctor or healthcare professional.

    Zometa Precautions: Tell youre doctor you're medical history, especially of: kidney problems, liver problems, asthma, any allergies (especially to other bisphosphonates such as alendronate, risedronate). Caution is advised when using this med at elderly because they may be more sensitive to effects about medication. this med should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss risks and benefits with your healthcare professional. it isn't known whether this drug passes into breast milk. Because of potential risk to infant, breast-feeding while using it drug isn't recommended. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

    Zometa drug interactions: Tell your pharmacist of every prescription and nonprescription drug you may use, especially: certain 'water pills' (loop diuretics such as bumetanide or furosemide), aminoglycoside antibiotics (e.g., gentamicin, tobramycin), mineral supplements (especially those containing calcium, magnesium, or phosphorus). don't start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.

    Zometa Overdose: If overdose is suspected, contact youre local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include: change/decrease in amount of urine.

    Zometa special notes: do not share this medication with others. Laboratory and/or medical tests (e.g., albumin, calcium levels, serum creatinine) will be performed to monitor your progress or possible side effects.

    If you missed Zometa dose: If you miss dose or your dose is interrupted, contact your healthcare professional to establish new dosing schedule.

    Zometa Storage: Store unmixed vials at room temperature between 56 and 86 degrees F (13 to 30 degrees C) away from light & moisture. don't store in bathroom. Keep every medicines away from children and pets. After mixing and/or subsequent dilution with IV fluids, this product should be refrigerated between 36 & 46 degrees F (2 & 8 degrees C) and used within 24 hours. Discard any unused portion of vials.
