    Potassium/sodium acid phosphate - oral

    (poh-tass-ee-um/so-dee-um foss-fate)

    common brand names: K-Phos

    K Phos M F Usage: this medication makes the urine more acidic. It's used to prevent formation of calcium kidney stones & to reduce odor and skin irritation caused by high ammonia urine. it may also be used with certain antibiotics to make them more effective.

    How to use K Phos M F: the usual dosage is two tablets four times a day with a full glass (8 oz or 240 ml) of water. don't lie down for 30 minutes after taking this medication. Take it medication exactly as prescribed. do not increase your dose or take this more often with out your doctor's approval.

    K Phos M F side effects: Stomach upset, loose stools or headache may occur the 1st few days as your body adjusts to the medication. If these effects continue or become bothersome, inform your pharmacist. Notify your healthcare professional if you develop nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, fluid retention, convulsions, unusual weakness, mental confusion, dizziness, muscle cramps, rapid or irregular heartbeat, breathing trouble, tingling or numbness of the hands or feet. When this medication is 1st started, there is a chance an old kidney stone will be passed. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

    K Phos M F Precautions: Tell you're physician if you have: kidney problems, heart disease, liver disease, Addison's disease, high blood pressure, any allergies, salt-free diet needs. this med must be used only if clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss risks & benefits with youre doctor. since small amounts of this medication found in breast milk, consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

    K Phos M F drug interactions: Tell your doctor of any over-the-counter or prescription medication you may take, including: aspirin, water pills, potassium supplements, salt substitutes, antacids, steroids, HBP drugs. do not take antacids at same time as it drug because antacids may prevent Its absorption. If you should take antacids, space dosing about this medication and the antacid as far apart as possible. do not start or stop any medicine without physician or physician approval.

    K Phos M F Overdose: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.

    K Phos M F special notes: Laboratory tests may be done periodically while taking it medication to monitor Its effectiveness and prevent side effects.

    If you missed K Phos M F dose: If you miss dose, take it as soon as remembered; do not take it if It's near the time for the next dose, instead, skip missed dose & resume some your usual dosing schedule. don't 'double-up' the dose to catch up.

    K Phos M F Storage: Store in room temperature between 59 & 86 degrees F (15 to 30 degrees C) away from heat, light & moisture. do not store in the bathroom.
