L Carnitine Usage: Also known as L-carnitine, it is a naturally occurring amino acid derivative required by the body in energy metabolism and for proper use of fats. this med is used as dietary supplement to treat carnitine deficiency. it may also be used in persons with abnormal plasma lipoprotein patterns. If you have serious kidney disease (such as ESRD/dialysis), the intravenous (IV) form of carnitine should be used. reason is that large doses of carnitine taken by mouth for long periods of clock may result in serious side effects (e.g., seizures), interfere with dialysis (increased nitrogen wastes), and cause 'fishy odor' to occur.
How to use L Carnitine: Take this drug as directed. don't skip any doses or take this more often than prescribed. the liquid form may be taken alone or dissolved in drink. Drink it slowly to prevent stomach upset. Doses should be spaced evenly all 3 to 4 hours as directed. this is best taken with or after meals. tablets or capsules should be taken at evenly spaced intervals. If stomach upset occurs, take each dose with food.

Discuss the risks & benefits with your doctor. Consult your pharmacist before using any med while breast-feeding.
L Carnitine drug interactions: Tell your doctor of any over-the-counter or prescription med you may take. do not start or stop any medicine without physician or doctor approval.

L Carnitine special notes: there is product sold in health food stores called vitamin Bt. it contains MIXTURE of D-carnitine and L-carnitine. this is not same as L-carnitine & can cause you problems. Be sure to take L-carnitine ONLY.
If you missed L Carnitine dose: If you miss dose, take it as soon as remembered; do not take it if it is near the time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose & resume you're usual dosing schedule. don't 'double-up' the dose to catch up.
