Hm Niacin Usage: Niacin (nicotinic acid) is used to prevent & treat niacin deficiency. It's also used to improve cholesterol & lower fat levels (triglycerides) in the blood.
How to use Hm Niacin: Take it pill as directed. Follow any special dietary recommendations made by your doctor or nutritionist while taking this medication. Take this pill with food to prevent stomach upset. Timed-release capsules or meds must be swallowed whole. don't crush or chew them or long action may be destroyed & side effects increased. If you are prescribed bile acid resin meds (e.g., colestipol, cholestyramine) separate the dose from niacin by six hours or more.
Hm Niacin side effects: this medication may cause flushing & feeling of warmth about face & neck within the 1st two hours about taking a dose. Itching, tingling, or headache may occur as well. These effects must subside as your body adjusts to pill. Stomach upset, heartburn, nausea, vomiting, & diarrhea may also occur. Report promptly any of these effects if they persist or worsen. Unlikely but report promptly: vision problems, dark urine, stomach (abdominal) pain, yellowing eyes or skin, irregular heartbeat, black stools, increased urination, muscle aches/pains. in unlikely chapter you have an allergic reaction to this drug, seek immeditial medical attention. Symptoms include: rash, swelling, dizziness, fainting, trouble breathing. To minimize the flushing effect (redness, itch) take plain (not enteric-coated) 325 mg aspirin tablet (or other NSAIDs such as ibuprofen) 30 minutes before each niacin dose. After few weeks, this flushing effect should stop occurring, or decrease in intensity. Also, avoid alcohol or hot beverages near time of niacin dose. Consult your pharmacist or pharmacist. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your pharmacist or pharmacist.
Hm Niacin Precautions: Tell your pharmacist your entire medical history, including: diabetes, heart disease, kidney or liver disease, gallbladder disease, gout, ulcers, any allergies - including aspirin and tartrazine (a dye in few food & med, including niacin). To minimize dizziness or lightheadedness when rising from a seated or lying position, get up slowly. for alcohol can intensify drug side effects, ask your healthcare professional or physician about use about alcohol. If niacin is used since treating a lipid (high cholesterol or triglyceride) problem, then it should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss risks & benefits with youre doctor. Doses for lipid problems generally much higher than daily multivitamin doses (minimum daily allowance). Niacin is excreted into breast milk. If niacin is being used for lipid problems, breast-feeding isnt recommended due to possible infant side effects. Consult your healthcare professional before you breast-feed.
Hm Niacin drug interactions: Tell your healthcare professional of any over-the-counter or prescription medications you taking especially: hypertension medication, diabetes medicine, fibrates (e.g., gemfibrozil, fenofibrate), 'statins' (e.g., lovastatin, atorvastatin). If you take insulin or oral diabetes medication, your dose may need to be altered due to increased blood sugar levels caused by niacin. Ask you're doctor. don't start or stop any medicine without pharmacist or pharmacist approval.
Hm Niacin Overdose: If overdose is suspected, contact youre local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
Hm Niacin special notes: Niacin is common in foods such as beans, milk products, eggs, chicken & steak. Eat more about these foods to increase the amount of niacin at youre diet if you have niacin deficiency. there are much about of niacin goods available. several can be purchased without prescription. Consult your doctor or pharmacist on choice of a product best for you. Laboratory tests will be performed (especially if prescribed for cholesterol/triglyceride control) to monitor for effectiveness and possible side effects. don't allow anyone else to take this medication.
If you missed Hm Niacin dose: If you miss a dose, take it as soon as remembered but not if It's almost clock for following dose. If close to time of following dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. do not double-up dose to catch up. If you stop taking it for one week or more, consult your doctor or physician before taking this again.
Hm Niacin Storage: Store in room temperature between 59 & 86 degrees F (between 15 and 30 degrees C) away from moisture & sunlight. do not store in bathroom. do not freeze liquid forms of it medication.
