Gemfibrozil Usage: this med is used to lower high cholesterol and/or triglyceride levels in the blood. High levels of cholesterol or triglycerides may block blood vessels, increasing the risk of heart disease. for best results, this drug must be used along with an exercise program & low-cholesterol, low-fat diet.
How to use Gemfibrozil: Take this medication as prescribed. it is usually taken 30 minutes before you're morning or evening meals. it may take several weeks to months before full effects of this pill noticed.
Gemfibrozil side effects: Stomach upset, heartburn, nausea, vomiting, gas, diarrhea, unusual taste, headache, dizziness, drowsiness, or blurred vision may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, contact your pharmacist or pharmacist promptly. Tell your healthcare professional immediately if any about these serious side effects occurs: numbness or tingling of hands or feet, joint pain, decreased sexual desire or ability (impotence), depression. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occurs: muscle pain/tenderness/weakness, fever, persistent sore throat, severe stomach pain with nausea & vomiting, yellowing of eyes and skin, dark urine, fast heartbeat. An allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact some your physician or pharmacist.
Gemfibrozil Precautions: this drug shouldnot be used if you have certain medical conditions. Before using it medicine, consult your doctor or physician if you have: severe liver conditions (e.g., primary biliary cirrhosis), severe kidney problems. Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: diabetes, gall bladder problems, allergies (especially drug allergies). it medication may make you dizzy, drowsy, or cause blurred vision; use caution engaging in activities requiring alertness such as driving or using machinery. Limit alcoholic beverages. If you take insulin or oral diabetes medication, youre dose may need to be changed because gemfibrozil may, in some instances, increase amount of sugar in your blood. Ask youre doctor if you need to change your dose. this drug must be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss risks and benefits with your physician. it is not known if gemfibrozil passes into breast milk. Consult youre doctor before breast-feeding.
Gemfibrozil drug interactions: Gemfibrozil must not be used with following medication because very serious effects (very low blood sugar) may occur: repaglinide. If you are currently using this pill, tell youre doctor or pharmacist before starting gemfibrozil. Also, itraconazole should not be used in combination with repaglinide and gemfibrozil because extremely low blood sugar could occur. Use caution if following drugs combined with gemfibrozil because serious side effects such as muscle injury (myopathy) infrequently could occur: 'statins' (e.g., lovastatin, atorvastatin), high-dose niacin (1 gram or more per day). Before you take gemfibrozil, tell you're physician of any over-the-counter or prescription pills you taking, especially of: anticoagulants ('blood thinners'), niacin. do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
Gemfibrozil Overdose: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms about overdose may include: abdominal cramps, joint & muscle pain, or severe diarrhea/nausea/vomiting.
Gemfibrozil special notes: your doctor may periodically perform lab tests during treatment to evaluate effectiveness about the drug & to cash for possible side effects. Know what you're cholesterol level is & understand what it means. youre pharmacist, physician or nutritionist can provide you with valuable info. do not share this med with others.
If you missed Gemfibrozil dose: If you miss dose, take as soon as remembered; do not take if it is almost time for next dose, instead, skip missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. do not 'double-up' the dose to catch up.
Gemfibrozil Storage: Store at controlled room temperature 68-77 degrees F (20-25 degrees C), away from light & moisture.
