    Cyclosporine - oral solution

    (sye-klo-spore-een)

    common brand names: Sandimmune

    Warning: Cyclosporine reduces body's ability to fight illness/disease (immunosuppressant), leaving patients vulnerable to infection or other problems (including cancer). Using additional drugs that treat organ transplant rejection may increase these tendencies. Certain brands of cyclosporine must not be used with other immunosuppressants. Cyclosporine can also cause high blood pressure & kidney problems. the risk of both problems increase with increasing dose and length of therapy. Psoriasis patients who have had certain previous treatments (e.g., PUVA, UVB, coal tar, radiation therapy, methotrexate) are at increased risk to develop cancerous skin growths (malignancies). Therefore, cyclosporine must be given only under close medical supervision. Because different brands deliver different amounts of medication, do not switch brands of cyclosporine with out you're doctor's permission. Laboratory tests (e.g., kidney function tests, blood tests) may be performed to monitor your progress.

    Sandimmune Usage: Cyclosporine is used to prevent or treat organ rejection in transplant patients.

    Sandimmune canbe used also for: this drug may also be used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, specific skin disorder (psoriasis), and has other uses as determined by your physician.

    How to use Sandimmune: it drug is taken orally. Take this in same time each day & consistently with or without food. To improve taste of oral solution, dilute it with milk, cranberry juice or orange juice. Transfer prescribed amount of medication to cup of diluent, stir well & drink as soon as possible after mixing. Use glass container whenever possible. Otherwise use hard plastic cup. do not use styrofoam cups. Rinse cup with milk or juice two times and drink to assure all pill is taken. Dry the outside of dropper. do not rinse this in water. Follow the dosing schedule for this medication carefully. If you were previously taking another brand of this medication, youre dosing may be changed. Ask your healthcare professional any questions you have about some your treatment.

    Sandimmune side effects: this drug may cause stomach upset, nausea, cramps, diarrhea or headache. other possible side effects include high blood pressure, increased hair growth on face and body, acne, tremor, swollen or inflamed gums, tingling about hands or feet. If any of these effects persist or worsen, inform your physician. Notify your pharmacist if you experience: mental confusion, blurred vision, fever, sore throat, stomach pain, hearing difficulty, chest pain, urine color change, fatigue, unusual bleeding or bruising, change in the amount of urine. in the unlikely event you have an allergic reaction to it drug, seek immediate medical attention. Symptoms about an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, breathing trouble. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your physician or physician.

    Sandimmune Precautions: Tell your physician your medical history, especially about: liver or kidney disease, blood disorders, chickenpox, herpes zoster, any infections, diabetes, any allergies you may have. Cyclosporine must be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss risks & benefits with your doctor. this medication is excreted into breast milk & should not be used while breast-feeding. Consult youre doctor.

    Sandimmune drug interactions: Tell you're doctor of every prescription and nonprescription medications you may use, including: vancomycin, aminoglycosides (e.g., gentamicin), H2-blockers (e.g., cimetidine, ranitidine), calcium channel blockers (e.g., diltiazem, nifedipine, verapamil), carvedilol, colchicine, orlistat, quinupristin/dalfopristin, amiodarone, digoxin, ticlopidine, danazol, potassium-saving 'water pills' (e.g., amiloride, spironolactone, triamterene), prednisolone, allopurinol, anti-seizure med (e.g., carbamazepine, phenobarbital, phenytoin), birth control pills, nefazodone, metoclopramide, nafcillin, azole anti-fungals (e.g., itraconazole, ketoconazole), macrolide antibiotics (e.g., clarithromycin, erythromycin), amphotercin B, sulfa antibiotics, diclofenac, tacrolimus, bromocriptine, nafcillin, rifampin, St John's wort, rifabutin, octreotide, 'statin' drugs (e.g., lovastatin, pravastatin). do not eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice unless your healthcare professional instructs you otherwise. do not start or stop any medicine with-out pharmacist or pharmacist approval.

    Sandimmune Overdose: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.

    Sandimmune special notes: It's important to keep regular physician visits so your progress can be monitored. Laboratory tests will be done periodically while receiving this drug.

    If you missed Sandimmune dose: If you miss dose, take it as soon as remembered. don't take it if It's near time for the following dose. Instead, skip missed dose and resume some your usual dosing schedule. do not double dose to catch up.

    Sandimmune Storage: Store at temperatures below 86 degrees F (30 degrees C), but do not refrigerate or freeze. Use opened solution within 2 months.

    Medical alert: some your condition may cause complications in medical emergency.
