Oxytocin Usage: Oxytocin is hormone used during late stage of pregnancy to induce labor (contractions). it is many times used to induce labor in difficult pregnancies or pregnancies at risk for complications (e.g., preeclampsia, eclampsia, diabetes).
Oxytocin canbe used also for: this drug may also be used during pregnancy to test heartbeat of fetus; & to remove the afterbirth (placenta) and control bleeding of womb (uterus) after childbirth.
How to use Oxytocin: Follow every instructions for proper mixing & dilution with correct IV fluids. If you have questions regarding the use of this medication, consult your physician. Give this medication slowly by vein (IV) as prescribed by physician. this drug should be mixed in a saline, dextrose, or Lactated Ringers solution. the dosage and length of treatment is based on your medical condition & response to therapy. Before using, check this product visually for particles or discoloration. If either is present, don't use liquid. Learn how to store & discard needles and medical supplies safely. Consult your pharmacist.
Oxytocin side effects: Nausea, vomiting, cramping, & stomach pain may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify the doctor promptly. Tell the pharmacist immediately if any about these serious side effects occur in mother: irregular heartbeat, dizziness, lightheadedness, swelling, severe bleeding (after childbirth), seizures, headache, blurred vision, one-sided weakness. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these serious side effects occur in newborn: irregular heartbeat, yellowing eyes or skin, bleeding in the eyes, seizures. An allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immeditial medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact some your healthcare professional or pharmacist.
Oxytocin Precautions: Tell the healthcare professional youre medical history, especially of: heart problems, bleeding problems, seizures, kidney disease, hypertension, any allergies. this medication isn't recommended since use during the 1st six months (2 trimesters) about pregnancy. Discuss risks & benefits with you're doctor. this medication passes in to breast milk. While there have been no reports of harm to nursing infants, consult some your doctor before breast-feeding.
Oxytocin drug interactions: Tell healthcare professional about every prescription & nonprescription pills used, especially: drugs used at anesthesia (e.g., epinephrine, thiopental), prochlorperazine injection, warfarin. don't start or stop any medicine without pharmacist or pharmacist approval.
Oxytocin Overdose: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
Oxytocin special notes: Laboratory and/or medical tests will be performed to monitor your progress.
If you missed Oxytocin dose: If your dose is interrupted or stopped, contact doctor to establish a new dosing schedule/rate.
Oxytocin Storage: Store unmixed vials/ampules in a cool place less than 59 to 77 degrees F (15 to 25 degrees C) away from light. After mixing & subsequent dilution with IV fluids, it product is stable at room temperature or refrigerated for 24 hours.
