Pitocin Usage: Oxytocin is a hormone used during the late stage about pregnancy to induce labor (contractions). It's many times used to induce labor in difficult pregnancies or pregnancies at risk for complications (e.g., preeclampsia, eclampsia, diabetes).
Pitocin can be used also for: this drug may also be used during pregnancy to test heartbeat of fetus; & to remove the afterbirth (placenta) & control bleeding of the womb (uterus) after childbirth.
How to use Pitocin: Follow all instructions for proper mixing & dilution with correct IV fluids. If you have questions regarding the use of this drug, consult some your physician. Give it drug slowly by vein (IV) as prescribed by physician. this drug should be mixed in saline, dextrose, or Lactated Ringers solution. dosage and length about treatment is based on youre medical condition & response to therapy. Before using, check this product visually for particles or discoloration. If either is present, do not use liquid. Learn how to store and discard needles & medical supplies safely. Consult your doctor.
Pitocin side effects: Nausea, vomiting, cramping, & stomach pain may occur. If any about these effects persist or worsen, notify physician promptly. Tell doctor immediately if any of these serious side effects occur in the mother: irregular heartbeat, dizziness, lightheadedness, swelling, severe bleeding (after childbirth), seizures, headache, blurred vision, one-sided weakness. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these serious side effects occur in newborn: irregular heartbeat, yellowing eyes or skin, bleeding in the eyes, seizures. An allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your healthcare professional or pharmacist.
Pitocin Precautions: Tell doctor your medical history, especially of: heart problems, bleeding problems, seizures, kidney disease, hypertension, any allergies. it drug is not recommended for use during the 1'st 6 months (2 trimesters) about pregnancy. Discuss risks & benefits with some your doctor. this medication passes into breast milk. While there have been no reports of harm to nursing infants, consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
Pitocin med interactions: Tell pharmacist of every prescription & nonprescription meds used, especially: medications used in anesthesia (e.g., epinephrine, thiopental), prochlorperazine injection, warfarin. do not start or stop any medicine with out pharmacist or pharmacist approval.
Pitocin Overdose: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
Pitocin special notes: Laboratory and/or medical tests will be performed to monitor your progress.
If you missed Pitocin dose: If your dose is interrupted or stopped, contact pharmacist to establish new dosing schedule/rate.
Pitocin Storage: Store the unmixed vials/ampules in cool place less than 59 to 77 degrees F (15 to 25 degrees C) away from light. After mixing and subsequent dilution with IV fluids, this product is stable at room temperature or refrigerated for 24 hours.
