Verapamil HCL Usage: this medication is calcium channel blocker. Calcium is involved in blood vessel contraction & at controlling the electrical impulses within heart. By blocking calcium, verapamil relaxes & widens blood vessels and can normalize heartbeats. Verapamil is used to treat chest pain (angina), HBP or irregular heartbeats. Ask your physician or pharmacist about possible problems related to use of short-acting calcium channel blockers.
How to use Verapamil HCL: this medication should be swallowed whole with a full glass of water unless your pharmacist directs you otherwise. it medication must be taken as directed to prevent chest pain. It's not effective if taken only when chest pain occurs. do not stop taking this drug suddenly without some your doctor's permission. Chest pain can occur if drug is stopped too fast. some your dose may need to be gradually decreased.
Verapamil HCL side effects: this medication may cause dizziness and lightheadedness especially during the first few days. Avoid activities requiring alertness. When you sit or lie down for while, get up slowly to allow your body to adjust and minimize dizziness. You may also experience weakness, fatigue, nausea, muscle cramps, headache, flushing or constipation. These effects should disappear as your body adjusts to the medication. Inform your doctor if they become bothersome. Notify you're healthcare professional immediately if you develop: breathing difficulties, swelling of the hands or feet, irregular heartbeat, fever, stomach/abdominal pain, yellowing eyes & skin, dark urine. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact some your healthcare professional or healthcare professional.
Verapamil HCL Precautions: Before using this medication, tell your doctor you're medical history, including: allergies (especially pill allergies), heart problems (e.g., heart rhythm disturbances, heart failure), liver or kidney disease, very low blood pressure, muscular dystrophy, brain tumors (cancer). Before heart surgery, tell you're physician you use it medicine. Verapamil prolongs & intensifies effects about alcohol in youre system. Avoid (or very carefully limit) alcoholic beverages while using this drug. Caution is advised when this drug is used at elderly. this medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss risks and benefits with you're doctor. this drug is excreted into breast milk & decision should be made whether to stop drug or avoid breast-feeding. Consult your physician before breast-feeding.
Verapamil HCL med interactions: Tell your healthcare professional of all prescription & nonprescription meds you may use, especially of: beta-blockers, intravenous (IV) calcium, cimetidine, cyclosporine, digoxin. Avoid any drugs that increase your heart-rate (the decongestants phenylephrine, pseudoephedrine & phenylpropanolamine are examples). These drugs are commonly found in over-the-counter cough-and-cold products. do not eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice unless youre doctor instructs you otherwise. do not start or stop any medicine without physician or doctor approval.
Verapamil HCL Overdose: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include rapid, slow, or irregular heartbeat; dizziness; fainting; & loss of consciousness.
Verapamil HCL special notes: Laboratory tests (e.g., liver function tests) should be performed periodically to monitor for side effects. don't share this medication with others.
If you missed Verapamil HCL dose: If you miss a dose, take as soon as remembered; do not take if It's almost clock for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. do not 'double-up' dose to catch up.
Verapamil HCL Storage: Store at room temperature away from sunlight and moisture.
