Verapamil HCL Usage: it drug is a calcium channel blocker. Calcium is involved in blood vessel contraction & in controlling the electrical impulses within heart. By blocking calcium, verapamil relaxes & widens blood vessels & can normalize heartbeats. Verapamil is used to treat high blood pressure.
Verapamil HCL canbe used also for: it med may also be used to help prevent chest pain (angina) or to treat irregular heartbeats.
How to use Verapamil HCL: the capsule form of it tablet may be taken without regard to meals. this tablet must be taken as directed to prevent chest pain. Its not effective if taken only when chest pain occurs. don't stop taking this medication suddenly with out your doctor's permission. Chest pain can occur if medication is stopped too fast. your dose may need to be gradually decreased.
Verapamil HCL side effects: this drug can cause dizziness & lightheadedness especially during the first few days. Avoid activities requiring alertness. When you sit or lie down since while, get up slowly to allow your body to adjust and minimize dizziness. You may also experience bloating, heartburn, nausea, blurred vision, muscle cramps, headache, flushing, constipation. These effects should disappear as your body adjusts to the medication. Inform your healthcare professional if they become bothersome. Notify your pharmacist immediately if you develop: breathing difficulties, swelling about hands or feet, irregular heartbeats, fever, malaise, stomach/abdominal pain, yellowing about skin & eyes, dark urine. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact youre doctor or pharmacist.
Verapamil HCL Precautions: Before using this drug, tell your healthcare professional your medical history, including: allergies (especially pill allergies), heart problems (e.g., heart rhythm disturbances, heart failure), liver or kidney disease, very low blood pressure, muscular dystrophy, brain tumors (cancer). Before heart surgery, tell your doctor you use it medicine. Verapamil prolongs & intensifies effects about alcohol in your system. Avoid (or very carefully limit) alcoholic beverages while using this medication. Caution is advised when this drug is used at elderly. this medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss risks and benefits with your healthcare professional. this drug is excreted into breast milk & decision should be made whether to stop med or avoid breast-feeding. Consult you're doctor before breast-feeding.
Verapamil HCL drug interactions: Tell your healthcare professional of every prescription & nonprescription drugs you may use, especially of: anticoagulants ('blood thinners'), beta-blockers, intravenous (IV) calcium, timolol ophthalmic, digoxin, disopyramide, HBP drug, quinidine, carbamazepine, rifampin, cimetidine, lithium, flecainide, cyclosporine. Avoid any drugs that increase your heart-rate (the decongestants phenylephrine, pseudoephedrine & phenylpropanolamine examples). These medications are commonly found in over-the-counter cough-and-cold products. do not eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice unless your physician instructs you otherwise. do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
Verapamil HCL Overdose: If overdose is suspected, contact youre local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include rapid, slow, or irregular heartbeat; dizziness; fainting; and loss of consciousness.
Verapamil HCL special notes: Laboratory tests (e.g., liver function tests) should be performed periodically to monitor for side effects. don't share this med with others.
If you missed Verapamil HCL dose: If you miss dose, take as soon as remembered; do not take if it is almost time for next dose, instead, skip missed dose & resume your usual dosing schedule. do not 'double-up' dose to catch up.
