Loperamide Usage: this medication is used to treat diarrhea or to reduce the amount of discharge in patients who have undergone an ileostomy.
How to use Loperamide: Take this medication by mouth exactly as directed. do not increase your dose or take it longer than directed without your doctor's approval. in acute diarrhea this is usually taken for only two days. Treatment of chronic diarrhea may continue for up to 10 days. Notify your physician if diarrhea does not stop after a some days. While taking this drug, drink plenty of clear liquids to replace fluid loss from diarrhea and prevent dehydration.
Loperamide side effects: Stomach ache, nausea, vomiting, bloating, constipation, dry mouth, drowsiness or dizziness may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, contact some your doctor promptly. To relieve dry mouth, suck on (sugarless) hard candy or ice chips, chew (sugarless) gum, drink water or use saliva substitute. Tell your physician immediately if you have it unlikely but serious side effect: stomach pain. An allergic reaction to it drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if this occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or healthcare professional.
Loperamide Precautions: Tell your doctor if you have: liver problems, ulcerative colitis, if you have recently taken antibiotics, allergies (especially med allergies). this medication may make you dizzy or drowsy; use caution engaging in activities requiring alertness such as driving or using machinery. Limit alcohol intake because this can intensify dizziness or drowsiness effects of this med. Use it pill cautiously in child. this pill should be used only if clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss risks & benefits with your physician. It's not known if it pill appears in breast milk. Consult your pharmacist before breast-feeding.
Loperamide medication interactions: Tell your doctor about any over-the-counter or prescription medication you may take, including: cholestyramine. do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or physician approval.
Loperamide Overdose: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms about overdose may include nausea, vomiting, slowed breathing, drowsiness or deep sleep, & slow pulse.
Loperamide special notes: it medication shouldnot be used longer than 2 days with out notifying your healthcare professional. do not treat child under six years of age with-out doctor's approval.
If you missed Loperamide dose: Take each dose as directed. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as remembered; do not take it if It's near clock for the next dose, instead, skip missed dose & resume your usual dosing schedule. don't 'double-up' dose to catch up.
Loperamide Storage: Store it drug at room temperature between 59 & 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) away from heat & light. do not store in the bathroom. Keep this & all medications out of the reach about child.
