    Electrolyte solution - oral

    (ih-leck-troh-lite solution)

    common brand names: Equalyte, Pedialyte

    Oralyte Usage: it solution restores fluids & minerals lost to diarrhea or vomiting.

    How to use Oralyte: do not add water. solution is ready-to-use. total amount to be given is determined by the severity about vomiting or diarrhea & the degree of dehydration. You may need to contact your doctor for exact amount to be given & since how long. Generally one to two ounces per pound of body weight is given over a period of two to 4 hours in this manner: one teaspoonful every 10 to 15 minutes for 30 minutes; if this is tolerated, give one tablespoonful every 15 to 20 minutes followed by 2 tablespoonfuls every 30 minutes. If not tolerated or if diarrhea persists, contact the doctor. amount given each time may be gradually increased until 4 to 6 ounces (120 to 180 ml) canbe given all 3 to four hours so that 1 to 2 quarts (1 to two liters) taken per day while diarrhea continues (adults may need more).

    Oralyte side effects: common side effect that usually goes away during treatment is mild vomiting. If this continues, call physician. Call healthcare professional immediately if any of following effects occur: convulsions or seizures, dizziness, rapid heart rate, increased blood pressure, irritability, muscle twitching, restlessness, weakness, swelling of feet or lower legs, puffy eyelids. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or healthcare professional.

    Oralyte Precautions: this solution should not be given when: they're is an inability to drink (as at cases of shock), persistent vomiting is present, stool losses are greater than two ounces per pound of body weight (100ml per kg) per hour--this is about 2 quarts (2 liters) per hour for a 30 pound (14 kg) kid, there is difficulty urinating, intestinal blockage is present. Call pharmacist immediately when signs of dehydration are present. These include: severe thirst, doughy skin, sunken eyes. Avoid another electrolyte-containing foods or liquids, such as fruit juices or foods with added salt, until treatment with this medicine is completed. Breast-fed infants should be given breast milk between doses of solution.

    Oralyte drug interactions: Tell your physician or healthcare professional if you taking any other pill (including nonprescription), such as: home remedies for diarrhea or vomiting. do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.

    Oralyte Overdose: If overdose is suspected, contact youre local poison control center or emergency room immediately.

    Oralyte special notes: Call the pharmacist if diarrhea continues past 2 days or if it must become worse during treatment. Soft foods such as rice cereal, bananas, cooked peas, cooked beans and potatoes must be eaten until diarrhea stops & regular food and milk can be taken again.

    If you missed Oralyte dose: it solution is given on an as-needed basis. Follow package directions.

    Oralyte Storage: Store un-opened container at room temperature away from light, heat or moisture. do not store in bathroom. After using, replace the cap, refrigerate (do not freeze) & use within 48 hours. don't re-use the container.
