    Doxercalciferol - oral

    (dox-er-kal-sif-e-role)

    common brand names: Hectorol

    Hectorol Usage: Doxercalciferol is used to treat persons on kidney dialysis (e.g., chronic renal disease) who have high levels of parathyroid hormone (secondary hyperparathyroidism). Parathyroid hormone helps to maintain your body's normal calcium levels; too much it hormone can cause other health problems (e.g., weak bones, heart arrhythmias).

    How to use Hectorol: Take this medication by mouth usually 3 times week during dialysis; or as directed by your healthcare professional. the dosage is based on your medical condition & response to therapy. Take this medication exactly as prescribed. your dosage may need to be adjusted or stopped temporarily based on laboratory test results (e.g., PTH levels).

    Hectorol side effects: Headache, nausea, vomiting, itching, unusual tiredness, or upset stomach may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify youre doctor promptly. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these serious side effects occur: swelling, constipation, unusual weight gain or weight loss, open sores (abscess), trouble breathing, joint pain, trouble sleeping, unusually slow heartbeat, dizziness. Tell your pharmacist immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: bone pain, muscle pain, change in amount of urine, increased thirst, loss of appetite, metallic taste, severe stomach pain. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your pharmacist or healthcare professional.

    Hectorol Precautions: Tell your pharmacist youre medical history, especially of: liver problems, problems with high calcium blood levels (hypercalcemia) or high phosphate blood levels (hyperphosphatemia), any allergies (especially to vitamin D products). Tell your doctor if you pregnant before using this medication. It's not known if this medication passes into breast milk. Consult your healthcare professional before breast-feeding.

    Hectorol drug interactions: Tell some your healthcare professional of all prescription & nonprescription drug you may use, especially: calcium supplements (e.g., calcium carbonate, calcium citrate), phosphorus supplements (e.g., sodium or potassium phosphate), certain antacids (e.g., calcium or magnesium-containing antacids), vitamin D containing products, cholestyramine, mineral oil, glutethimide, phenobarbital, phenytoin, rifampin. do not start or stop any medicine without physician or pharmacist approval.

    Hectorol Overdose: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms about overdose may include: metal taste in the mouth, irregular heartbeat, seizures, severe mental/mood changes.

    Hectorol special notes: do not share this medication with others. Laboratory and/or medical tests (e.g., PTH, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus) will be performed to monitor youre progress.

    If you missed Hectorol dose: If you miss dose, contact your doctor or pharmacist to establish a new dosing schedule.

    Hectorol Storage: Store at room temperature between 68 & 77 degrees F (20 & 25 degrees C) away from light & moisture.
