Simular Drugs : Theophylline, Theophylline Anhydrous
Theophylline Usage: this medication improves breathing by opening air passages in lungs. It's used in treatment of asthma, chronic bronchitis, & emphysema.
How to use Theophylline: it medication works best when taken on an empty stomach one hour before or two hours after meals. If stomach upset occurs, it may be taken with food. Long acting capsules and meds must be swallowed whole. Crushing or chewing them may destroy long action & increase the possibility of side effects. If capsules too large to swallow, open capsule and mix contents with jelly or applesauce and swallow without chewing. it drug works best if constant level is maintained in the body. Do this by taking doses at evenly spaced intervals.
Theophylline side effects: Dizziness, headache, lightheadedness, heartburn, stomach pain, loss about appetite, restlessness, nervousness, sleeplessness or increased urination may occur as your body adjusts to pill. If these symptoms persist or worsen, inform your physician. Inform youre doctor if you experience: chest pain, rapid or irregular heartbeat, confusion, severe stomach pain, breathing difficulties. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact you're pharmacist or pharmacist.
Theophylline Precautions: Avoid drinking large amounts of beverages containing caffeine (coffee, tea, colas) or eating large amounts of chocolate. Caffeine can increase side effects of it medication. Smoking affects it pill. Be sure to tell you're healthcare professional if you smoke or use nicotine. Inform your healthcare professional if you stop smoking. youre dose may need to be adjusted. this med should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Because small amounts of this drug appear in breast milk, consult with your healthcare professional before breast-feeding. Tell your pharmacist your complete medical history especially if you are taking medicine (beta-blockers) for high blood pressure.
Theophylline medication interactions: Inform your doctor about every medicines you use (both prescription & nonprescription), especially if you take: cimetidine, erythromycin, troleandomycin, mexiletine, tacrine, barbiturates, disulfiram, rifampin, thiabendazole, birth control pills, rifabutin, ticlopidine, quinolone antibiotics, beta-blockers, phenytoin, fluvoxamine (an SSRI antidepressant), St John's wort. do not start or stop any medicine without healthcare professional or pharmacist approval.
Theophylline Overdose: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include unusually fast or slow heartbeat, loss about appetite, nausea/vomiting, sleeplessness, irritability, restlessness, headache, increased thirst, fever, ringing in ears, delirium, muscle twitching or weakness, seizures, sweating, or quick breathing.
Theophylline special notes: do not change youre diet with out 1st checking with your doctor. large amounts about char-broiled foods or a high protein, low carbohydrate diet can affect action of this med. do not change brands of it medication with out consulting some your pharmacist or doctor. Not all brands identical in action.
If you missed Theophylline dose: If you miss a dose, take as soon as remembered; don't take if it is almost time since the following dose, instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. do not 'double-up' dose to catch up.
Theophylline Storage: Store at room temperature away from moisture & sunlight. do not store in bathroom. do not freeze liquid forms of this drug.
Medical alert: youre condition can cause complications at medical emergency.
